What to expect at your first Yoga class?
Great! You are ready to try a Yoga class for the first time or returning to your practice after some time away. In person classes are generally 1hr but 45mins is a popular length in gyms and 1hrs 30mins are also popular. So always best to check the start and end time.
It’s always a good idea to choose a style of Yoga that suits your needs and contacted the teacher with any questions like needing to bring a mat or if they are provided. Some classes may offer Yoga props like a bolster, strap or blocks etc, they help to modify, support or adjust the poses. It’s best to book in advanced so you secure your spot in class.
If possible go to class with an empty tummy or after 2hrs of eating a small/light snack. Generally, it is expected to arrive a few minutes early to class so everyone can find a space, place their mat down and be ready to begin on time. The class maybe silent whilst practicing or have music playing, there maybe ambient lighting/candles or incense, all to enhance the experience.
Most styles of Yoga, whether they are flowing, dynamic or slower paced will still incorporate the breath and being mindful of the movements. Many will finish a class with a complete relaxation pose (Shavasana), a mantra/meditation or breath work (Pranayama).
You do not need to wear special clothes to a class just comfortable clothes you are able to move in, wearing layers is preferable. It is best to practice bare foot, but in colder months or in Shavasana you may wish to keep them on.
A Yoga class will probably have people of all ages, sizes, various flexibility and strengths. It is best to not compare yourself to anyone else as we are all at different stages on our Yoga journey. Remember to take a water bottle with you, to rehydrate after class.
If you have any questions about the class, postures or anything else always chat to the teacher.
