What type of Yoga mat?
If you haven’t practiced Yoga before and you are going to a class for the first time it’s always best to check with the teacher, studio or gym if spare mats are available to use. Once you begin to practice regularly it is beneficial to invest in your own mat. You can then practice in class, at home, on holiday or anywhere!
There are many different types of mat some things to consider are:
depth - the thicker the mat the softer it is, but being squidgy can make it harder to balance.
length - make sure your mat is long enough to lay on with out your head or feet hanging off.
material - cotton, rubber or synthetic etc. whatever the material, make sure you don’t slip. A good test is doing down ward dog.
weight - depending on the type of material the mat might be heavier then you think.
texture - make sure it offers enough grip, not too bumpy or has a design/markings that are distracting.
price - mats can range hugely so choose a mat that's right for you within your budget.
Keep your mat clean and dry, maybe invest in a mat strap or bag to carry it in, if it doesn’t already come with one.
